Ways To Give

Are you as down in the dumps as I am when you think about the state of the world? We see memes and funny comments all the time poking fun at the lack of humanity in the world. While we make light of these situations, the reality is heartbreaking. If kindness is truly lost on the world, well, that’s a sore place to be. But while the world may be divided, and our country divided, I still believe there IS goodness in the world. There are still people helping people. There are still communities that come together in times of sorrow, disaster and need. That is precisely where I believe we can work together to make the world a much better place.

Helping others is beneficial, not only for our communities, but for us – as individuals. At a time when mental health is so prominent in our daily lives, helping others is a great way to get out of the funk and make a true difference. Can one person change the world? Maybe. Maybe not. But if one person is met with another person, and another, and another, and each time joy and love is spread tenfold eventually a real, measurable, impact can be made. Spreading kindness is NOT hard. Everyone has off days, and bad days, and days when they just don’t want to adult. Accept that in life and it will be much easier to meet adversity with a compassion and understanding.

Everyone can make a difference. But everyone is different, therefore, their walk in life is different, and their road to making an impact is different. Here are just a few ways for you to consider while on your journey to helping others.

The best way to give, in my opinion, is simply a little of your time. From homeless shelters to humane societies, hospitals to schools, there is always a need for volunteers. There is always a void needing filled. If you have just a little bit of time to give, I whole-heartedly recommend it – it is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. If you can give some time, here are some causes that are dear to my heart. Check them out to see if they would be a fit for you:

Monetary Contributions

If you’re unable to give time, you can always make a contribution to a cause. And there are a ton of reasons why someone can’t give their time – like the recent trouble in Australia. Here in the US, that’s a hefty plane ticket, and a loooong trip. But if that is a situation that’s touched your heart, you can give here:

If there is a particular need you are passionate about, check out their website for info on where and how to contribute. If you need help, send me a message and I’ll be glad to point you in the right direction!

Donate Goods

Another way of giving back to is donate items. No, not to goodwill. While, yes in theory it helps with job training and things like that, I’m a little biased considering how filthy rich the CEO is… kind of makes me sick. But I understand, it’s convenient. You have a bag, half full of junk that might be perfect for ONE person – haul it off to goodwill. But there are better uses for your old hand-me-down clothes. From a church clothing pantry to a homeless shelter – your unwanted goods could truly make a world of difference to someone in need. Here are some places you can donate unwanted goods, where ever you may live:

  • Salvation Army – unlike Goodwill, they give donations to families and individuals in need.
  • Habitat for Humanity – Pro tip, they have a Resale store – for my fellow frugals.

If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make the change.

Local Impact

If you want to make a huge difference locally, talk to your local churches, addiction centers, health departments, and if you have them, homeless shelters. I’m sure they would gladly accept all forms of help they can, because chances are they are overworked, underpaid, over needed, and under staffed.
Other places you may check are your local fire department, EMT’s, police stations – if nothing else I’m sure these civil servants you be appreciative of a $5 giftcard to cover a coffee. (Let’s NOT discuss how atrocious it is that a coffee is $5.. let’s focus on good deeds today)

This is far from a comprehensive list of ways to make an impact, but it’s a starting point. These are just a few of the causes that are dear to me. If you want to volunteer your time and need help finding an organization, let me know and I’ll assist you any way I can! Until then, let’s work on spreading kindness in this world – because that could be all a fellow human needs
Lots of Love,
